What counts as viral on a small account?

Ten thousand views might be a quiet day for one account and the best month of the year for another. That’s why raw numbers make a poor test of whether a post really worked.

Start with the account’s usual

Take its recent posts and find the middle number for likes plus comments. Half of the posts sit above that number and half below, so one huge post can’t distort it the way it would distort an average.

Then divide a post’s engagement by that middle number. A result of 5 means the post did five times better than usual.

A rough way to read it

There’s no official line, and these are only starting points:

Why this helps smaller accounts

Comparing a post with the account’s own numbers keeps follower count out of the way. You can learn as much from a 4,000-follower creator’s hit as from a big brand’s, and often more, because the small creator’s post had less paid reach and fame behind it.

One post isn’t a formula

A spike can come from timing, a repost or plain luck. If the same format or topic beats the usual three or four times, you’ve found a pattern you can use.
